Hello, Janice. Excellent article, but I have a few questions. I have been losing weight the healthy way. I am 5'2" and started out at 160 pounds. My BMR was around 1,500 cals and I restricted to 1,000 to create a deficit. I also exercised everyday. I am almost twenty. I have been overweight for about six or seven years. In one week, I managed to lose ten pounds (I've been doing a lot of fatburning exercises at the gym and have seen inch losses almost everywhere). I am now 150 and want to get to 120 or 110. Will losing thirty or forty pounds most likely cause me to have loose skin? I know you can't really tell, but I just need your opinion. The reason I ask is because I am quite young and my skin does snap into place when I pinch it, but thirty pounds is kind of a lot. What do you think?

Hi well done on losing weight - though 10lbs in one week is excessive! You have to create a deficit of 35,000 calories to lose that amount of fat so I'm not sure what you did .... the equivalent of running more than 10 marathons! If you want to save skin - don't lose weight that fast because it can't keep up with that kind of pace. But if you lose 2lbs or so a week you should be fine if you have good skin tone. The important thing is not to keep gaining and losing the same 20 or 30lbs. If you yo-yo like that you can really hammer your skin. Once you lose weight, do your best to maintain your new size. Best wishes for reaching your target weight in a healthy way Janice

Janice, Thank you for writing this. I have found it very helpful. I'm currently 236 lbs and about 4 months ago I was at 268. I have been doing personal training and doing 1 hour of cardio per day. My goal is to lose 2-3lbs per week. I'm not really sure what my ideal weight is. I've been overweight all of my life. I was around 160 in high school and then in college I started to gain. I spent the better 1/2 of 20 years over 250 and am terrified that when I get the weight off I'm going to look freakish. I'm not opposed to plastic surgery other than the cost. I'm doing 3 days of strength training per week also. I only drink water and juice and I'm wondering what else I can do to make sure I'm doing enough to make my body look even better after the weightloss. Thanks, Dawn

Hi Emma, you are doing the right things to lose weight and give your skin the best possible chance to stay toned. If you can stick at the exercise you will end up looking and feeling fantastic. Although you have been losing 2 to 3 pounds weight a week which is normally faster than I recommend, weight loss at the start of a program is often a bit faster than later on and you are not losing excessively for your starting weight. Try and settle down to losing a steady 2lbs a week if you can. You also have a great advantage - you are young and skin tends to be more elastic the younger you are. No guarantees because I don't know your skin as well as you but I would say things are probably looking good for you if you can maintain your motivation. Janice

I am very obese (420 lbs) and I have dieted before (eating just salads and fruit) with moderate excersice (just walking 1 mile a day) and have lost as much as 30 lbs in two weeks and I noticed my skin starting to sag and it freaked me out, I stopped working out and put the weight back on. What do you think I should do ?

Well loose skin or no loose skin I'd want to be a healthy weight - but that's my choice. Yours may be different. But if you do all you can to follow the guidelines in this article and above all lose weight steadily and slowly you give your skin the best possible chance of recovery. 30lbs in 2 weeks is just too much for skin to cope with.

kind regards

Janice

Please don't freak out about the skin issue, you will still feel amazing i lost over 100 pounds, to be frank you didn't get to be 420 pounds overnight.. you must deal with some of the issue we face skin is one of those being that size.. you will still feel so much better I promise.. I had a surgery and had 15 yes 15 pounds of my skin removed... I feel great.. i hurt like heck.. please keep up what you are doing.. its so hard.. but you can do it..I'm sorry I hope I didn't appear to be rude, it's just a tough battle we face.. drink water like crazy.

Hello Janice! Thanks for the information. I'm taking your advice and slowing down my weight loss, however this is kind of hard. Im 5'1, was 260, am now 250. I've lost 10 pds in three days. I DO NOT want saggy skin but do understand that I need to change my eating habits so I am trying hard to avoid the skin but maintain a healthy life. I am now eating 1500 calories per day, and working out 2-3 times a week but what should I change to avoid losing weight so quickly?? Eat more? LOL I hope thats not the answer... Please help

Hi Gina,

depending on how much exercise you are doing you are probably eating enough to lose weight slowly.

Most dieters find that they lose a lot of weight in the early weeks and then weight loss slows down naturally. (Much of the early weight loss is water and not fat unfortunately)

See how it goes after a few weeks and if your weight loss has not slowed down naturally to a steady pound or two a week then yes, eat a little more!

Janice

P.S. And why is eating a little more such a bad thing????

I have been yo-yo dieting for the past 20 some years since I had my first child. Like last year I had lost 45 of the 60 lbs I was trying to lose. I lost the weight in about 7 months but gained it all back in about 10 months. I am currently trying to lose it again but more slowly, only about 1 lb a week. I had a lot of sagging skin particurlarly on my inner thighs and abdomen. My stomach has an enormous amount of fat and has never went down since I had my first pregnancy over 20 years ago. When I gained the weight I gained about 65 pounds in 4 months so this caused a lot of stretched skin and stretch marks. Is it possible for my skin to be firm again or will I still have the same sagging if I lose the same amount of weight even if I do it more slowly while drinking water and eating healthier? I did weight training 2-3 times a week and lots of high intensity cardio to lose it before - I ate pretty healthy but ate a little more junk before also.

It's hard to say Sarita because everyone is different. Just give your skin the best possible chance to recover by following the tips here and see how it goes. in any case you will look better and feel healthier if you are at the best weight for you no matter what your skin does.
